MORAGA, California – The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team fell on the road to Saint Mary's by a score of 88-75 on Friday night.
Facing an opponent that has made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the Owls (8-4) held the Gaels (10-2) in check for the first 20 minutes with effective defense against outside shooting. On offense, a balanced scoring attack for Florida Atlantic saw four scorers reach double figures.
FIRST HALF
Redshirt sophomore forward
Devin Williams was active early on, recording a block on the defensive end and connecting from downtown for the Owls' first score.
Freshman guard
Josiah Parker checked in and delivered seven straight points to cut a nine-point deficit into four. He contributed to a strong start on shooting, with FAU converting 50% of their attempts from the field for the first 12 minutes.
Williams added two more triples while capitalizing dunks from sophomore forward
Maxim Logue, and Parker closed the half as FAU trailed 38-30. The defense held firm, holding the Gaels to 2-for-16 in their three-point attempts.
SECOND HALF
Florida Atlantic leaned on Logue inside, scoring seven of the team's first 10 points of the period. His putback and-one slam and subsequent free throw kept the game within single digits.
Saint Mary's lead grew, stretching to 20. The Owls forced nine turnovers, including three in less than a minute, and were within 15 thanks to another bucket from Logue.
A late surge on offense was not enough, but FAU hit six of its last eight field goal attempts, culminating in a hook shot from just outside the paint by Parker to make it a 13-point game.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John Jakus
On the rhythm offensively tonight…
"In the first half, we had 10 assists on 11 baskets. When we did it right, it was good basketball. Now, we needed a lot more possessions for it to work out. The only way to beat them is to get above 70, we finally got above 70. So we were chasing something, and the guys did a decent job of that. Now I think they missed some reads. There are some times where the passing could have been more beautiful and inclusive, but as far as their overall effort to take a really good team that's good at playing slow and trying to enforce some pace, they did it, but you can only do it when you get stops."
On Maxim Logue's performance…
"Maxim, I think if you put him out there, he is going to get you 10 and 6, 15 and 8, whatever it was, if you give him enough time to produce. On the glass, he had an advantage today because of his wingspan. His English will eventually match his level of play. His raw talent is all there. He certainly is a gifted basketball player."
