BOCA RATON, Fla. – After a slow start, the Florida Atlantic Owls won three-straight sets to capture a four-set victory against the North Texas Mean Green, 3-1, on Friday evening at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
The Owls improved to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in American play with the win, while North Texas fell to 11-4 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida Atlantic held a 3-2 lead to open the match, but the Mean Green answered back to outscore the Owls 13-8 to hold a four-point lead, 15-11, at the opening media timeout. Out of the break, the Owls scored four unanswered points, capped off by an ace from
Emsley Venard, to tie things up at 15. Florida Atlantic kept things even at 17-17 after a kill from
Erin Morrissey, but the Mean Green closed the set on an 8-2 run to take the first, 25-19.
The Owls opened the second on an 8-5 run, capped off by back-to-back aces from
Libby Ashline. Florida Atlantic held a two-point advantage at 13-11, following a kill from
Kierstin Bevelle, but North Texas scored six unanswered points to force back-to-back timeouts from the Owls, trailing by four, 17-13. The Mean Green maintained a four-point advantage through a 19-15 lead, but the Owls dominated the remainder of the second, producing a 10-1 run. A kill from Ashline and a Mean Green attack error capped it off. The Owls took the second set 25-20 and tied up the match.
Florida Atlantic opened set three on a 7-3 run to spark an early timeout from North Texas. The Owls continued their momentum, outscoring the Mean Green 11-4 to extend the lead to nine, 16-7. Another kill from Ashline and a North Texas attack error forced the Mean Green to call their second and final timeout of the third. North Texas retook the momentum out of the break, rallying to cut the Owls' lead to just two at 16-14, forcing the Owls to call their second timeout. Out of the break,
Olivia Hart recorded her ninth kill of the day to spark a 9-1 set-closing run as the Owls took the third 25-15 to take the 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth, Ashline got the scoring going for the Owls as they scored six unanswered points to open the set and force an early timeout from North Texas. Florida Atlantic extended the lead to 11-2 after a service ace from Hart, and North Texas called its final timeout. The Mean Green tried to chip away at the Owls' lead, but it wasn't enough as Florida Atlantic wrapped up the fourth, 25-14, following a pair of kills from
Anna Hartman and Morrissey, to close out the four-set win.
STATS & NOTES
- Hart and Kayla Richardson led the Owls offensively against the Mean Green. Hart posted a team-leading 14 kills, while Richardson finished second on the team with 11 kills, but hit a team-best .435 clip. Hart also added four blocks, three digs, and an ace in the win.
- Victoria Hensley dished out a team-best 17 assists, while posting her first double-double of the season with a team second-best 14 digs.
- Isabelle Northam anchored the Owls' back row with a team-best 17 digs, while Maggie Allred led the Owls at the net, recording a team-best six blocks in the win.
- As a team, the Owls held advantages in kills (44-42), hitting percentage (.169-.064), service aces (8-4), and blocks (10-7).
- The Owls also held an advantage in side-out percentage, 52 percent to 40.9 percent.
