PHILADELPHIA – The Florida Atlantic volleyball team rallied in the fifth to capture a 3-2 road win (25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 17-15) over Temple on Friday inside McGonigle Hall.
The Owls improve to 10-6 on the season and 3-2 in American play, while Temple drops its third-straight match to fall to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Temple opened the match on a 12-9 run to take the early lead. FAU battled back within one, 13-12, after a kill from
Luye Marquez-Moreno, however, Temple tacked on two more to hold the 15-12 lead at the opening media break. The Temple Owls extended their lead to 17-13 to spark an FAU timeout. Out of the break, the Owls rallied on a 6-1 run, capped off by a service ace from
Maya Van Heyst, to put the Owls in front 19-18. Temple scored back-to-back points to retake the lead, 20-19, and spark the FAU Owls to call their final timeout of the first. However, a kill from
Anna Hartman sparked a 6-3 set-closing run for Florida Atlantic, which was capped off by another kill from Hartman, to give FAU the 25-23 opening-set win.
After dropping the first two points, the Florida Atlantic Owls opened the second on a 10-4 run to take a 10-6 lead and spark Temple to call an early timeout. FAU continued its set-opening run, outscoring Temple 5-3 to hold a 15-9 advantage at the media break. Florida Atlantic continued to outpace Temple, extending its lead to seven at 20-13, however, Temple responded with a 7-2 run to rally back within two, 22-20, and force the Owls of FAU to call their first timeout of the second. After trading points, Hartman and
Kierstin Bevelle closed out the set with back-to-back kills to capture the 25-21 win and give Florida Atlantic the 2-0 lead.
Temple opened the third on a 9-6 run, forcing the Florida Atlantic Owls to call their first timeout of the set, however, FAU battled back to tie up the third at 13-13. Temple pushed its lead back out to four at 17-13, but the FAU Owls answered back, going on an 8-3 run to retake the lead in the third, 21-20, after a kill from Van Heyst. However, Temple responded with a 5-1 run of its own to take the 25-22 set three win and force a fourth, 2-1.
After battling through a 12-10 Temple lead to open the fourth, the FAU Owls scored three unanswered, capped off by a kill from
Olivia Hart, to give team its first lead of the fourth at 13-12. After a 15-14 lead at the technical break, Florida Atlantic retook the advantage 16-15, however, Temple responded with five unanswered to take the lead back, 20-16, and force the FAU Owls to call another timeout. Florida Atlantic battled back within two at 20-18, however, Temple closed the set on a 5-3 run to take the fourth set 25-21 and force a final deciding fifth set, 2-2.

Out of the break, the Florida Atlantic Owls went on a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to one, 10-9, and spark Temple to call its first timeout of the fifth. Temple got one back, but a 3-0 FAU run, which included a pair of kills from
Sara Gamboa and a block from
Natalie Depaula and
Sequoia Layne, put the FAU Owls in front 12-11 as Temple called its final timeout of the set. Out of the break, Temple scored three unanswered to hold match-point at 14-12, however, with their back against the wall, the Florida Atlantic Owls rallied on a 5-1 run to take the 17-15 win and capture the five-set win.
STATS & NOTES
- Hartman and Libby Ashline led the Owls offensively in the match. Hartman led the Owls with a team-high 15 kills, hitting .333, to go along with four digs and three blocks.
- Ashline also finished in double-figures for the Owls, registering 11 kills and hitting .333, as well as adding six blocks and four digs.
- Van Heyst dished out a match-best 47 assists, in addition to adding nine digs, five kills, three blocks, and two service aces.
- Isabelle Northam led the Owls' back row, finishing with a season-high 19 digs in the five-set win.
- As a team, Florida Atlantic outpaced Temple in kills, 61-52, digs, 73-60, assists, 56-47, and blocks, 14-13, and outhit Temple, .154-.138.
- With the win, the Owls move to 6-2 all-time against Temple and take the 2-1 series advantage in Philadelphia.
