BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men's tennis opened the 2025 season this week by hosting a three-day hidden-dual tournament, the first such in program history.
Boca Raton and the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center served as the event site for the four team participants, including the Owls, Army, Mercer, and Wisconsin.
FAU opened the weekend with a three-match double sweep versus their Army opponents and then took two-of-three doubles matches versus Mercer, winning on courts one and three. Friday's nightcap saw FAU run the singles' table over Army.
Day two, Saturday, began with Mercer and Wisconsin facing off, only to see the competition suspended for nearly four hours due to weather. When play resumed, the Owls were on standby for doubles play. FAU won courts one and two in doubles play versus Wisconsin, then took four-of-seven matches on the singles courts over the visiting Badgers.
Sunday was a beautiful day at the Strauss. Mercer and Army opened the day under clear blue skies with eight singles matches. FAU and Wisconsin follow with the young Owls taking five-of-seven matches to close the tournament.
Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU's Director of Tennis
"I am pleased, but not satisfied with our performance this weekend at our invite," said Gonzalez. "Our team is extremely motivated and is showing a lot of togetherness and fight on the court. Our boys seem to be enjoying every moment out there and embracing all the challenges with the right mindset.
"Shout out to Mark (Havilcek) for going undefeated this weekend. He is playing confident and with a sense of belonging. He is showing grit and composure in the tough moments. Another shoutout to our freshmen Jan (Kusy) and Marek (Pazdera), who went undefeated in singles play this weekend. They were both solid as a rock and played with a lot of maturity.
"Overall, this was a great event for all teams. It gives us all the opportunity to play some matches before our season kicks in. We need to continue to get better. Our schedule doesn't get any easier."
