BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic women's tennis team is coming off a six-match homestand and will head to Virginia this weekend for two matches. The first is versus fellow American Athletic Conference member Memphis, in a non-conference contest, on Saturday, Mar. 23 at 10 a.m. That contest will be hosted by VCU, who will be the Owls' opponent on Sunday, Mar. 24 at 10 a.m.
Florida Atlantic, ranked No. 64 in the the latest ITA national poll, is 11-4 on the year. Saturday's match versus Memphis will be the first time the two teams have met, but not the last as they potentially will meet again at the 2024 AAC Championships scheduled for April 17-21. Historically, the Owls are familiar with VCU with the two teams playing six previous times. The last meeting was in March of 2023 with the Owls coming away with the 6-1 victory and moving the all-time series to 3-3. In fact, the Owls have been on the positive side in the last two meetings, both played in Boca Raton. FAU last played in Richmond, Virginia in 2018 and first played at VCU in 2002.
This weekend's lineup could see court movement if last week is an indication; however, freshman Panna Bartha has played each of the Owls' 14 matches on court #1 and is expected to do the same this weekend. Bartha is 12-2 on the year and is 9-4 in doubles play. While Bartha is closing in on double-digit doubles victories, both Victoria Gomez O'Hayon and Millie-Mae Matthews also hold nine (9-3) doubles wins in 2024. The Matthews, Gomez O'Hayon duo have surpassed the double-digit singles win plateau with Matthews entering the weekend with an 11-2 record and Gomez O'Hayon holding a 10-4 record.
The trio will lead the Owls this weekend, who have enjoyed success in 2024 with an 11-4 record and collectively winning at a .630 percentage for both singles and doubles play.
