No. 15 Sandy Owls Earn Pair of Wins to Open UAB Beach Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 15 Florida Atlantic beach volleyball team (4-2) opened the UAB Beach Classic on Saturday with a straight-set sweep over UT Martin and a 3-1 win against CUSA opponent UAB.

NO. 15 FLORIDA ATLANTIC 5 – UT MARTIN 0

Olivia Strandberg and Mikayla Law-Heese got the Sandy Owls started with a straight-set sweep against UT Martin's Reagan McGee and Dylan Sulcer on court four, 21-12, 21-13. Brooklyn Goedhart and Ashleigh Adams extended the Owls lead to 2-0 as Brooklyn earned her first win as a Sandy Owl, defeating the Skyhawks 2s pair of Dylan Mott and Sydney Eckhardt, 21-18, 22-20. Alivia Orvieto and Logan Mignerey clinched the match for Florida Atlantic, earning another straight-set sweep on court five against the Skyhawks' Kayla Carrell and Haeleigh Paulino, 21-18, 23-21. Julie Honzovicova and Kate McLaughlin made it 4-0 Sandy Owls with a dominant performance on court three, earning a 21-9, 21-9 win against UT Martin's Addy Vaughn and Ryan Rednour. Courtney Moon and Marketa Svozilova closed out the Sandy Owls 5-0 sweep, earning Florida Atlantic's fifth straight-set sweep, defeating the Skyhawks' Olivia O'Keefe and Jenna Vallee, 21-18, 21-12.

Olivia Strandberg and Mikayla Law-Heese gave the Owls the opening lead with their second straight-set sweep of the day, defeating UAB's Olivia Chychrun and Ashley Torsone, 21-11, 21-16. Brooklyn Goedhard and Ashleigh Adams once again extended the Owls lead to two against the Blazers, earning a two-set win over UAB's Isabel Day and Jessica Ennis, 24-22, 21-18. Alivia Orvieto and Logan Mignerey earned their second match-clinching win, defeating the Blazers' Olivia Stant and Lauren Mohler, 21-18, 21-11. UAB got one back on court three as Julie Honzovicova and Kate McLaughlin fell in a two-set battle to UAB's Madeline Sigmon and Brooke Pertuit, 21-15, 21-19. Court one eventually went unfinished due to a lack of daylight. Courtney Moon and Marketa Svozilova fell in the opening set 19-21, but rebounded to capture the second 21-19 before the match was called.
