BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic softball team (23-7, 5-1) celebrated a come-from-behind 5-4 walk-off win to complete the three-game sweep of fellow American Athletic Conference member UAB on Sunday.
UAB scored the first run of the game in the top of the third and then added a second run in the top half of the fifth. The Owls cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Owl starter
Gabby Sacco, who battled sickness all week, started for Florida Atlantic and worked six innings before giving way to
Ainsley Lambert. Sacco was charged with three of the UAB runs, Lambert the fourth, but she had the "luck of the Irish" on her side as the pitcher of record when the Owls staged their comeback. Lambert moves to 5-1 on the year.
FAU headed to the bottom of the seventh with the team's hottest hitters (2-5 in the order), who were 19-39 for a .487 average, due up. The Owls'
Cameryn Orland led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by a fielders' choice. A wild pitch and two walks loaded the bases for
Kamryn Jackson, who hit a bases-clearing triple to right/center to evening the score at 4-4.
Jesiana Mora followed with a game-winning RBI single, giving the Owls a 5-4 win and the sweep.
- The Owls record their first AAC sweep of the young season
- FAU's five hits were recorded by Cammeo Presutti, Jackson, Mora, Trinity Schlotterbeck and Orland
- Jackson's triple was the lone extra base hit of the game
- The Owl pitching staff scattered 10 hits and issued one walk in the win
The next four FAU games will be played on the road. The Owls will travel to FIU for a single game on Tuesday, Mar. 19 and will then play a three-day, three-game series at Memphis over the weekend.
Fans may purchase tickets online or at FAU's softball stadium.
