BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic's women's tennis team made it seven wins in a row with a 5-2 victory over the visiting South Alabama on Saturday morning. With the win, FAU moves to 7-1 on the season.
The Owls picked up the doubles point, despite Millie-Mae Matthews and Victoria Gomez O'Hayon suffering their first loss on court #1 to become 5-1 on the season. The duo of Carla Galmiche and Lexi Silna picked up court #2 by a 6-2 score while the duo of Panna Bartha and Amber McGinnis clinched the point for FAU on court #3.
With FAU up 1-0, singles play began. Silna worked quick on court #4 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory pushing the score to 2-0. McGinnis gave the Owls a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court #6 and the match was clinched by reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Panna Bartha. Bartha won on court #1 in three sets, remaining perfect on the season at 8-0. Matthews gave the Owls their final point of the 5-2 win with a 6-2, 7-5 court #5 victory.
Florida Atlantic will play a rare road match next Saturday, Feb. 24 at North Florida and will then return home to play host to Tulane on Friday, March 1 at 3 p.m.
"It was a hard-fought win by the team today. They weren't able to perform at their best level of tennis, but they found ways to stay competitive and showed a lot of grit, especially starting off with the doubles point. We will continue to work hard for the next match."
