BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls picked up their second conference sweep of the season on Friday, earning a straight-set victory, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-18), over the Memphis Tigers at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
The Owls improve to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in AAC play, while Memphis drops to 7-8 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
Florida Atlantic started hot, jumping out to an 8-3 lead to open the match as Memphis called its first timeout. The Tigers started to rally, closing within three to a 13-10 Florida Atlantic lead, however, the Owls answered back, producing an 11-7 run to hold match point, 24-17. The Tigers scored three unanswered to close the gap to four, but
Katelynn Robine delivered the set-winning kill after a wild rally to seal the Owls' 25-20 set one win.
Exactly like the opening set, the Owls sprinted out of the gates, producing a 9-3 run to take the lead in set two and spark a Memphis timeout. Florida Atlantic continued to play aggressively and pressure the Tigers, outscoring Memphis 8-4 to extend their lead to double figures after a
Natalie Depaula kill, 17-7, sparking the Tigers' second timeout of the set. Both squads scored six as a kill from
Madison Dyer put the Owls at 23-13. Memphis got two back, 23-15, however the Tigers committed back-to-back errors to close out the set as Florida Atlantic won 25-15 to take the 2-0 advantage.
The Owls and Tigers battled through an 8-8 tie to open set three, however, the Owls broke away after an 8-1 run, capped off by a kill from Robine, to take the 16-9 lead. The Owls eventually held match point at 24-15. Memphis rallied to score three unanswered, closing within six, 24-18, but one final Tiger error closed out the match as the Owls won 25-18 to clinch the 3-0 sweep.
"We had a very good week of practice. I was feeling good coming into the game today. I love how tough we played, and they stayed focused for the whole entire time. We played really well against a good Memphis team."
- Katelynn Robine led the Owls offensively in the match, recording a match-high 12 kills off an impressive .522 clip.
- Victoria Hensley led the Owls with 30 assists while also finishing with her fifth double-double of the season, tallying a team-leading 11 digs in the win.
- Maggie Allred finished with a team-leading two blocks against the Tigers.
The Owls hit the road for the first time in conference play as they head to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls on Sunday, Oct. 6. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
