BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball (8-7, 0-2 AAC) opened up its AAC home slate on Saturday, falling in a hard-fought four-set battle, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 17-25, 22-25), against the Temple Owls (10-3, 1-1 AAC) inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
Three Owls registered double-digit kills in the match, led by
Arianna Beckham with a team-best 14 kills, hitting .321 in the contest.
Romina Cornelio and
Katelynn Robine also posted double-digit kill performances, tallying 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Isabelle Northam led the Owls with 17 digs, while Cornelio registered her third double-double of the season with a team second-best 13 digs.
Victoria Hensley dished out a match-high 35 assists and
Lauryn Green led the Owls with four blocks in the match.
Florida Atlantic scored three straight to open the match, but Temple battled back to even the first at 4-4. The two squads traded points back-and-forth through a 9-8 Florida Atlantic lead after a block from
Katelynn Robine and
Lauryn Green, however, Temple went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. Florida Atlantic battled back to close within three at 23-20, but Temple secured the last two points to take the first 25-20 and hold the 1-0 advantage.
After a 1-1 tie to open the second, the Owls produced a 5-0 run to quickly take a 6-1 advantage after a service ace from
Noelle Stephens. Temple cut the Florid Atlantic lead down to one at 12-11, but a pair of kills from
Romina Cornelio and
Arianna Beckham and a Temple attack error pushed the Owls lead back to four, 15-11. Temple went on an 8-3 run to take their first lead of the set at 19-18, however, the Owls locked in over the remainder of the set, outscoring Temple 7-4 to take the second 25-23 and even the match at a set apiece, 1-1.
Temple opened the third on a 3-1 run, but Florida Atlantic responded to retake a 4-3 lead. The match remained even at 5-5, but Temple produced a 4-0 to retake the lead at 9-5. Florida Atlantic battled back to cut the Temple lead to just one at 15-14 after a kill from Stephens, however Temple closed the set on a 10-3 run to take the third, 25-17, and retake a 2-1 advantage.
Following an 8-8 tie to open the fourth, Florida Atlantic scored four unanswered to hold a 12-8 advantage. The Owls maintained a three-point lead through 16-13, but Temple produced a 4-0 run to take a lead at 17-16. Florida Atlantic continued to battle Temple, closing within one at 23-22, but Temple scored on a pair of kills to close out the fourth and take the four-set win, 3-1.
The Owls will look to bounce back on Sunday as they rematch Temple at 1 p.m. inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
