BOCA RATON, Fla. – After taking a 2-1 lead into the halftime break, the Florida Atlantic women's soccer team conceded a late goal in the 82
nd minute to finish in a season-opening 2-2 draw against Arkansas Little Rock at FAU Football Stadium on Thursday.
The Owls struck first in the 7
th minute as
Elin Simonardottir notched Florida Atlantic's first goal of the season by tapping in a ball from
Emmy Schleifer and
Kaylin Johnston to put the Owls up 1-0.
Arkansas Little Rock responded to bring things even in the 25
th minute, however the tie was short-lived as Elin Simondottir punched in her second goal of the night in the 28
th minute off a ball from
Michelle Horan and
Sloane Young.
With just under 10 minutes to play, the Owls committed a tough foul at the very edge of the penalty box, giving the Trojans a chance to tie. Colleen Gilliland took the shot and punched in the game-tying goal through the right side of the net, just off the fingertips of
Blythe Braun. The Owls tried to answer back on a shot in the 87
th minute that was saved by the Trojans keeper, but Florida Atlantic ran out of time as the horn sounded to close out the 2-2 draw.
- Elin Simonardottir notched both of Florida Atlantic's goals in the game, tying her total output from the 2022 season and marking her first career brace.
