FAIRFAX, Va. – The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the opening day at the 2023 Patriot Invitational with a historic performance on Thursday that saw four school records fall and four wins.
With two days to go, both teams currently sit in first place in their respective fields.
Men
- The men currently place in first with 307 points
- Opening up the finals was the first school record of the night: the 200 free relay. The team of Nick Shaffer, Jacob Rubin, Max Ahumada and Logan Thornsberry combined for a time of 1:19.55
- Rubin captured the first-place finish in the 50 free (19.99), setting the meet record
- Timo Paisley tallied the victory in the 500 free (4:26.05)
- David Arneskov placed in third in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.15
Women
- The women's side stands in first out of eight teams with 312 points
- Izzy Jones posted the women's first school record in the 50 free with a time of 22.88. The previous best 50 free time was set over 26 years ago
- Two records were set in one during the 400 medley relay. Riley Trout, Bilu Bianchi, Dolores Margni, and Jones combined for a record-breaking time of 3:41.47, while Trout's 100 back split of 54.35 also set the school's best mark
- The 200 IM saw the Owls reach both first and second place with Roberta Circi placing on top (2:01.86) and Yasmine Safargar taking the next spot (2:039.2)
- Alicia Mora and Trinity McNall stood out on the diving board, placing in first and second, respectively in the 3-meter finals. Mora's best score was in the preliminaries with 303.40, while McNall posted a mark of 254.30 in the finals
The Owls will hit the pool for the second day of the Patriot Invitational on Friday. The preliminary events will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m.
