CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Florida Atlantic volleyball (17-11, 9-6 AAC) extended its win streak to three on Friday, rallying from one set down to capture a four-set road victory over the Charlotte 49ers (10-17, 4-10 AAC) at Halton Arena.
Katelynn Robine put on a clinic in the match, scoring a season-high 16 kills on a .316 clip. Robine scored seven of her 16 kills in the second set.
Arianna Beckham and
Valeria Rosado also had phenomenal nights, posting a pair of double-doubles with 13 kills, 13 digs and 13 kills, 11 digs, respectively.
Victoria Hensley powered the Owls impressive offense in the win, tallying a match-high 52 assists, while
Romina Cornelio led the Owls back row, tallying a team-leading 15 digs.
Charlotte opened the match on a 6-2 run to take the early lead. The Owls battled back to eventually tie the set at 15-15 off Hensley's second kill of the set, but a 49er setting error pushed the Owls in front 16-15 to spark a Charlotte timeout. The 49ers went on a 7-3 run out of the timeout to take a 22-19 advantage. The Owls got two back off a Beckham kill and another 49er setting error to cut the deficit down to one, 22-21, but Charlotte closed the set on a 3-0 run to take the opening 1-0 lead, 25-21.
Florida Atlantic opened the second on a 4-1 run, capped off by a Robine kill. The 49ers cut the Owls lead down to two, 9-7, after a 6-5, however, the Owls answered back with a 5-2 run to hold a 14-9 advantage at the second set media timeout. Charlotte once again cut into the Owls lead at 18-15, but the Owls locked in over the remainder of the set to secure the 25-19 win and even the match at one apiece, 1-1.
The two squads battled early in the third through an 11-10 Florida Atlantic lead, however the Owls flexed their muscles, outscoring the 49ers by double, 14-7, over the remainder of the third to win the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match, 25-17.
The Owls continued their momentum into the fourth, opening the set on a 6-0 run. Charlotte cut the Owls' lead down to five, 8-3, however it was short lived as Florida Atlantic went on another 6-0 run to push the lead to double-figures, 14-3. The 49ers produced a 9-7 run to bring the set back within nine at 22-13, but it was too little too late as the Owls closed the fourth with a 3-2 run to eventually claim the four-set win after a Beckham kill, 25-15.
The Owls will close out their two-match series against the 49ers on Sunday, Nov. 12 with a scheduled 1 p.m. first serve inside Halton Arena.
