FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University men's tennis set the match's tone by capturing the doubles point. The Owls, 3-2, then captured four singles court en route to a 5-2 victory over in-state foe Florida Gulf Coast University, Wednesday evening in Fort Myers, Florida.
Senior
Hunter Robbins put the Owls up 2-0 with a straight set win.
Joao Graca moved the match score to 3-0 and within one point of the Owls clinching the win. FGCU captured court three, but minutes later, FAU's
Kevin Huempfner defeated his court two opponent giving FAU the 4-1 lead and clinching the match. The remaining two matches would play out with FAU's
Alvaro Fernandez Horta battling back from being down in the first set to win the first set with a tiebreaker and then capture the next set 6-4 to give the Owls their fifth point.
"Good win today against a tough FGCU team," said
Matthew Lasprilla, FAU's assistant coach. "We will look to build on this win heading into the ITA Kick-Off this Saturday against Arizona. The boys are ready for the challenge."

The Owls will next travel to Texas for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday and Sunday and will then head to Deland, Florida and Stetson University where they will face Mercer on Friday, Feb. 10 and then Stetson o the same day at 3 p.m. FAU will not return home until March 3rd.
Home matches are played at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center and are free and open to the public. Seating is available and cheering is encouraged.
