BOCA RATON, Fla. –
Filip Krolo, a Florida Atlantic University junior on the men's tennis team, closed out his three-set match 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, to clinch the 4-0 win over the visiting USF Bulls, on Monday.
"Today, I saw progress," said
Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU's director of tennis. Our boys competed tough and were ready for a battle. Shoutout to our captain, Hunter [Robbins] for doing a great job leading the way. His energy, presence, and leadership are contagious. I also was impressed by Alberto [Colas], today. He is really improving by the day and is looking very strong. Last but not least, I was also impressed with Filip [Krolo]. He did a very good job of staying composed and closing out the third set. We will now focus on recovering our bodies from the weekend and preparing for our next challenge, this Saturday."
The win moves the Owls' record to 2-1 on the year, while USF falls to 0-3. The victory concluded the 2023 FAU Invite, which featured two matches a day, over the last three days of which FAU ground out over 10 hours of court time, playing UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Rice on Saturday, and USF.
The Owls took a 1-0 lead by winning the best two-of-three doubles matches. Wins came on court one and three, giving FAU its first doubles point of 2023.
Robbins, the only Owl to register wins in both singles and doubles, was the first to capture his singles match giving FAU a 2-0 lead. Colas, the only Owl to record a point in straight sets, was next putting the FAU up 3-0. That lead held for the next 45 minutes with the Bulls fighting and forcing the remaining four matches to a third set, including court four where FAU was up a set and had a 5-4 advantage in the second set, but was eventually left unfinished.
Just as the Owls surpassed the three-hour mark, Krolo secured a court three win, giving the Owls back-to-back wins versus USF (2022-23).
