FORT Myers, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team suffered a late goal in the 88th minute in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. The Owls record now stands at 2-2-2, while the Eagles improved to 2-3.
Â
It appeared as if the game was heading into a draw with under two minutes remaining. Grace Paradis of Florida Gulf Coast netted the game-winner for the Eagles.
Despite the defeat, the Owls controlled the pace of the game with a 13-8 advantage in shots. A couple of prime opportunities came from Bri Austin. In the 28th minute, Austin took a nice pass from Mia Sennes 10 yards out. After a turn, Austin fired a shot that sailed just to the right of the goal post.
Austin had another good look in the 85th minute with a left-footed shot, but again was just outside of the post. She led the Owls with six shots on the afternoon.
Â
Thelma Hermannsdottir and Morgan McDonald each got off two shots. Playing the full 90 minutes were Amanda Martin, Jodi Smith and goalkeeper Lexi Gonzalez. Gonzalez registered a pair of saves in the game.
Â
The Owls will hit the road this week for a pair of matches in Tennessee with Memphis and UT Martin on the dockett on Sept. 8 and Sept. 10.
