Second Half Flurry Propels Owls to Comeback Victory

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic women's soccer erased a 2-0 halftime deficit with three scores after the break to post a win in the team's first American Conference match of the season, 3-2 over Charlotte on Thursday night at FAU Soccer Stadium.
The Owls (3-3-4) equalized on two goals in quick succession by Hailey Santiago in the opening minutes of the second half, and the game-winner came courtesy of freshman Amelia Hillman in the 84th to record conference win No. 1 in Patrick Baker's 700th career game as a collegiate head coach.
THE TURNING POINT
After a nearly two-hour delay to start, Charlotte (4-4-0) earned its two goals in the 12th and 31st minutes. The 49ers not only held the Owls off the scoreboard, but out of the shot column as well, in the first 45'. Santiago's first goal came off a PK rebound just three minutes after the break, and her equalizer was a header off a tremendous long ball from Sydney Neira less than three minutes later.
THE FINISH
With time ticking down, the Owls attacked the box from the right, with defender Georgia Cousins' cross true, right to the foot of Hillman on the right side of goal. Her one-touch finish gave the Owls their first lead of the night, with under seven minutes remaining, and a frenzy of Charlotte shot attempts late – four in the last four minutes – were all turned away, two saved by FAU goalkeeper Lily Holden among her six on the night.

The Owls' next conference matchup is on the road, in a week's time, against UAB in Birmingham, Alabama. Game time on Sept. 24 is 8 p.m. Eastern.
