BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University volleyball opens a three-game road stretch on Friday as the Owls head to the Lone Star State to face off against the UTSA Roadrunners on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Convocation Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET on CUSA.TV.
- The Owls enter Friday's contest with a 10-4 overall record and a 0-2 mark in C-USA play so far this season. Last weekend, FAU opened conference play, falling 3-0 to North Texas on Friday, and closing the weekend falling in a four-set battle with UTEP, 3-1.
- Head coach Fernanda Nelson is in her 11th season in Boca Raton and has led the Owls to a 149-130 (.534) overall record, sitting just one win away from her 150th career win.
- FAU's sophomore trio of Valeria Rosado, Klara Zarnovicka, and Katelynn Robine lead the Owls offense, recording 165 (3.59 per set), 125 (2.78 per set), and 116 kills (3.05 per set) so far during the 2022 campaign.
- Fellow sophomore Noelle Stephens has been the Owls' leading setter this season, dishing out team-high 450 assists, averaging 9.78 pet set.
- Senior Camryn Vogler and Rosado lead FAU in digs with 159 (3.46 per set) and 122 (2.65 per set), respectively.
- Senior Lauryn Green leads the Owls in blocks with a team-best 39 deflections, while Zarnovicka has also been a big net threat for FAU this season, posting 32 blocks.
- The Owls closed out their C-USA opening weekend on Sunday, falling in a four-set battle against the UTEP Miners, 3-1.
- FAU dominated the Miners 25-17 in the opening frame, but UTEP responded to take three-straight, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-17, and capture the 3-1 win.
- Robine served up a new career-high six service aces in the contest
- Rosado and Zarnovicka led the Owls with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
- Noelle Stephens dished out a match-high 34 assists
- Defensively, Camryn Vogler and Lauryn Green also recorded match-highs recording 15 digs and five blocks in the contests, respectively.
- UTSA enters Friday's contest with a 5-8 overall record and a 0-1 record in C-USA play.
- The Roadrunners are just coming off their C-US-opening match, which saw the Roadrunners fall 3-0 against No. 23 Rice.
- The Roadrunners are in their first season under head coach Carol Price-Torok, who led UTSA to a 5-8 record so far in her first year in San Antonio.
- UTSA is led by Cansu Gunaydin, who has posted a team-leading 151 kills (3.08 per set), followed by Amanda Ifeanyi who has tallied 93 kills (1.90 pet set) during the 2022 campaign.
- The Roadrunners' Courtney Walters leads the team in assists, dishing out a team-best 360 assists (7.66) so far this season.
- Defensively, UTSA is led on the backrow by Ava Camacho, who has posted 209 digs (4.27 per set), followed by Walters and Gunaydin, who have also tallied triple-digit digs with 106 (2.26 per set) and 104 (2.12 per set), respectively.
- At the net, Alicia Coppedge and Ifeanyi lead UTSA in blocks, posting a team-leading 41 (0.84 pet set) and 36 blocks (0.73 per set) each this season, respectively.
UTSA leads the all-time series between the two programs, 8-1. The Owls picked up their first-ever win against the Roadrunners in the last meeting between the two programs, earning a 3-0 sweep against UTSA on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, in Boca Raton. FAU has never beaten UTSA on their home court, holding a 0-4 record for contests played in San Antonio.
The Owls continue their first C-USA road trip of the season as FAU visits the nationally ranked No. 22 Rice Owls for a 2 p.m. first serve on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Tudor Fieldhouse.
