BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University volleyball (10-3, 0-1 C-USA) fell in its C-USA opener, 3-0, against the North Texas Mean Green (7-9, 1-0 C-USA) on Friday night inside FAU Arena.
The Owls battled to a 4-3 North Texas lead after a
Klara Zarnovicka kill to open the match. FAU kept the opening frame within three on
Vanda Zimova's first kill of the contest at 11-8, but FAU struggled to find an answer to the Mean Green as North Texas outscored FAU 14-10 over the remainder of the set to give the Mean Green the 1-0 lead.
FAU outscored the Mean Green to open the second as the Owls took a 4-3 lead after a
Lauryn Green kill. However, the Owls didn't hold the advantage long as five unanswered points from North Texas turned things around to put the Mean Green up 8-4. FAU continued to battle as they kept things close before a 3-0 FAU run capped by a pair of North Texas errors brought the Owls back even at 19. North Texas kicked its lead back out to three after a 4-1 run, but FAU responded with a run of its own off a Zarnovicka kill, a North Texas attack error, and an
Aniya Harvey ace to even the set once more at 23-23. The Owls kept things even at 24-24 and 25-25, but two errors from the Owls closed the set as North Texas took a 2-0 lead after the second.
North Texas opened the third on a run before a 3-0 run from the Owls on a pair of kills from
Arianna Beckham and a North Texas error made it 5-3 Mean Green, but North Texas responded on a run of their own to kick the lead back out. The Owls just couldn't match North Texas in the final set, despite the Owls outscoring the Mean Green 6-5 to close out the set.
