NORFOLK, Va. – The Florida Atlantic Baseball team was soundly defeated by Old Dominion on Friday night by a final of 14-0. The Owls are now just one game ahead of the Monarchs in the C-USA standings.
Conference USA's No. 1-ranked offense came out swinging on Friday night and never relented. After
Hunter Cooley retired the first two hitters he faced with relative ease, the middle of the order broke through for a walk and four hits. FAU trailed 3-0 after one.
The Owls offense struggled to hit ODU freshman Blake Morgan. Their best chance to score came in the fifth with runners at the corners and two outs. Morgan induced a groundout, however, and escaped with no damage done.
In the bottom of the frame, the Monarchs officially pulled away with a two-out, two-run homer to make it 7-0. They would add four more in the sixth and three in the eighth for a two-touchdown final.
- Cooley lasted five innings, tying his shortest outing of the season. He threw 101 pitches.
- Evan Waterbor allowed four runs in the sixth before holding ODU scoreless in the seventh
- Brock Helverson conceded three runs on four hits in the eighth
- For the second straight game, the FAU offense was contained to five hits
- Tyler Kelder's double in the second was the only extra-base hit of the night
- Armando Albert singled in the fifth to extend his reached-base streak to 36 games
The Owls will look to turn it around on Saturday in game two. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
