BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team, ranked No. 67 in the latest national poll, returned home for a scheduled match with Cleveland State University. The two teams adjusted all day trying to beat the rain and, ultimately, it was FAU who ended the day with the 5-0 win.
The match was originally scheduled for noon; however, based on the forecast, the two teams elected to begin the match at 9:30 a.m. Once the wet courts had nearly dried from the overnight rain, light showers began once again. In the end, the two teams began the match shortly before 12:30 p.m.
Time shuffling wasn't the only adjustment the Owls would make on Wednesday. There were new doubles pairing but the Owls worked together as if nothing was new and took courts one and three, earning the first point of the match.
Singles play got underway and, there too, the lineup saw significant shifts. Once again, the squad prevailed by clinching the match that had originally been scheduled as a play out format, but with looming clouds shifted to a clinch format.
Finn Stodder and
Hunter Robbins finished minutes apart. Stodder played up a court, but still made quick work of his opponent winning 6-0, 6-1 and improving to 8-1 in dual match play. Robbins, who has been a doubles' hero throughout the season, took advantage of his court six singles opportunity by winning 6-1, 6-1.
Up 3-0, the Owls needed to secure one more court for the win and they pulled it off with a
Nicolas Jadoun straight set win. On court three and closely behind was
Alvaro Fernandez Horta, who captured court two. Courts one and four did not finish due to weather over the Everglades and moving towards FAU.
The Owls remain perfect at home, boasting a 5-0 record in Paradise and are 10-3 on the season. Cleveland State falls to 5-8 on the year. FAU will host Conference USA member UTSA on Thursday. The Roadrunners will enter the match with a 7-6 record.
Assistant Coach Matt Lasprilla on Wednesday's match
"Good team win today. We will be ready for a battle in our first conference match tomorrow against UTSA."
