BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball (13-11, 3-9 C-USA) battled tough against the No.22-ranked team in the nation, but it was a tall task as the Owls fell in three, 18-25, 18-25, 16-25, against the WKU Hilltoppers (24-2, 12-0 C-USA) on Friday night at FAU Arena.
The Owls started off strong with Katelynn Robine tallying the first kill of the contest and then delivering an ace to give FAU the 2-0 lead. A pair of Hilltopper attack errors extended the Owls lead to three at 4-1, but WKU responded with a 6-0 run to give the Hilltoppers their first lead of the contest, 7-4. A kill from Klara Zarnovicka kept the Owls within four at 14-10. FAU scored three straight points off a Robine kill and back-to-back WKU attack errors to bring the Owls back within four at 21-17, but the Hilltoppers closed the set on a 4-1 run to take the opening lead, 25-18.
Klara Zarnovicka recorded the Owls' first point of the second on a kill to make it 2-1, but WKU went on a run to jump out to an 11-3 run to open the frame. After WKU extended their lead to 10 at 15-5, the Owls outscored WKU 10-5 off a pair of 3-0 Owl runs to bring the match back within five, 20-15, but it just wasn't enough as the Hilltoppers would close the frame on a 5-3 run to take the second, 25-18, and put the Owls at a two-set deficit entering the third.
The two squads traded points to open the third as things remained even at 2-2. The Hilltoppers then jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but the Owls scored three in a row off back-to-back service aces from Lauryn Green and a Hilltopper service error to bring things back even at 6-6. The Hilltoppers responded to outscore the Owls 14-3 to take a 20-9 lead. FAU went on a 7-5 run as the set came to a close, but it was just a little too late as the Hilltoppers would capture the third 25-16 and take the straight-set victory, 3-0.
The Owls will close out their 2022 home slate on Sunday as they host the Charlotte 49ers for senior day. First serve will follow the conclusion of the senior day ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at noon inside FAU Arena.
