MIAMI, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University men's soccer executed its gameplan for 86 minutes on Wednesday night. Ultimately, the Owls were denied a place in the AAC postseason tournament after No. 22 FIU broke a scoreless tie with just under four minutes left in the match.  Â

A cagey first half played out with the visiting Owls outshooting the favored Panthers 3-2. The strategy for the second 45? Defend. The Owls needed at least one point to clinch a place in the AAC tournament.

FIU finally earned its breakthrough with a perfectly placed header in the 87th minute. Left with just minutes to equalize, the Owls could not come up with a response.

Strauber finished with four saves. FIU outshot the Owls 5-3 for the match.

With Charlotte's 5-1 victory over Temple, the 49ers edged the Owls out of the sixth spot in the AAC standings based on goal-differential.
