Owls Visit Memphis for Pivotal Conference Matchup

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (2-2-2 AAC) is in a battle for a place in the American Athletic Conference postseason tournament. The Owls will have a major opportunity in front of them when they visit Memphis (3-2-1 AAC) on Saturday night for an 8 p.m. EST kickoff.
ABOUT THE OWLS
- The Owls enter Saturday in seventh place in the AAC standings with eight points – they are tied on points with Charlotte but behind the 49ers based on conference goal-differential
- The top six at the conclusion of the regular season qualify for the postseason tournament
- A win on Saturday would vault the Owls into the top four
- FAU is coming off a 2-1 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday
- After falling behind 1-0 in the 4th minute, the Owls controlled possession for most of the match and outshot the Eagles by a significant margin
- They finally converted the equalizer in the 84th minute when freshman Yuval Oren found himself on the other end of a Spencer Mallion free kick
- FGCU would respond just four minutes later to retake the lead and hold for a one-goal victory
- The result was the first time this season in which the Owls scored at least one goal but did not earn a win or draw (previously 3-0-3).
- The Owls were without regular contributors Leo Keller and Victor Claudel – both are expected back in the lineup on Saturday
ABOUT THE TIGERS
- Memphis is 6-3-4 overall and coming off a 1-1 tie with No. 12 Lipscomb on Tuesday
- The Tigers have AAC wins against SMU, UCF, and Temple and losses to FIU and Tulsa – they drew 1-1 with Charlotte
- Memphis is led offensively by Alberto Cruz with seven goals – the freshman came through in the clutch on Tuesday scoring the tying goal with less than 30 seconds left in regulation
- Goalkeeper Colin Welsh has earned AAC Defensive Player of the Week honors three times this season including this past week
- Head coach Richard Mulrooney is in his eighth season with the program
- The former MLS and United States Men's National Team player was named as an assistant under then-head coach Richie Grant for one season before being promoted to his current position.
MATCH HISTORY
- FAU and Memphis last met for the first and only time on October 1, 1993, when they played to a 1-1 draw
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Owls return home to face No. 20 SMU next Friday for senior night
- The regular season concludes in Miami against FIU on November 2
