BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (FAUSports.com) --Â The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team will look to bounce back against the University of Alabama-Birmingham Saturday afternoon. The Owls are coming off a 70-57 loss to Middle Tennessee State Thursday evening.
Saturday's game is slated for a 3 p.m. CT/4 p.m. ET tipoff. The game will be heard in the South Florida area on Fox Sports 640 AM and can be viewed on ESPN+.
While the Owls are coming off a tough loss, the Blazers enter the game as winners in five of their last six. UAB's only blemish in five conference games is an 85-80 upset loss at Rice last week.
FAU did not play UAB last season. The last matchup between the Owls and Blazers was a 65-58 FAU victory at The Burrow. While FAU is 3-4 overall at home vs. UAB, the Owls have never won at Bartow Arena (0-5).
The last time the Blazers and FAU clashed in Birmingham was back in January of 2019, with FAU suffering a a 67-50 setback.Â
The Owls conclude a stretch of three games in five days when Charlotte visits The Burrow on Monday. That contest vs. the 49ers is also the first of three straight at home, with Western Kentucky and Marshall coming to Boca Raton on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Trending in the Right Direction
FAU posted its third consecutive winning season in 2020-21, making
Dusty May the first Owls' head coach to lead a team to three straight winning seasons in the school's NCAA Division I history. Back in 1992, Tim Loomis coached the Owls to three straight seasons with a winning percentage above .500 while the team was a member of NCAA Division II.
A winning record in 2021-22 would make May the first ever at FAU to coach a men's basketball team to four straight seasons above .500.
Martin Making a Mark
Alijah Martin has stepped up in a big way during his second year as an Owl. After averaging 4.2 points per game in his first season, the second-year freshman is putting up 13.1 points per contest so far this season.
Martin scored 13 points at MTSU Thursday to lead the Owls, giving him five straight games in double-figure scoring. He has reached double digits in 11 of 15 games this year. He tallied 10+ points just 4 times in 21 games last year.
