Saturday Doubleheader Does Not Go Owls’ Way

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Two innings, one in each game of the doubleheader, pushed Old Dominion past Florida Atlantic University baseball Saturday, as the Monarchs took both ends of the twinbill.
ODU (23-5, 9-1 Conference USA) broke open a 3-1 opening game with a seven-run sixth, in a 10-3 win. Then, though FAU (15-16, 4-7 C-USA) had an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap, again, a crooked number propelled the Monarchs: six in the third and an eventual 8-2 final score.
NOTE: Sunday's final game of the series has had its gametime moved up. First pitch from FAU Baseball Stadium will now be at 10 a.m.
Quotable
Head Coach John McCormack:
"We thoroughly got outplayed. We got outpitched, we got outhit, and we gotta get better."
Game One
The Beginning
Each team scored in their first turn, as the Owls tied it in the home half on a Nolan Schanuel opposite-field single. The Monarchs scored once in the second and again in the fifth for a 3-1 lead.
The Turning Point
In the sixth, ODU began the inning with a pinch-hit home run, and the next six batters all reached. It would eventually become a seven-run frame and 10-1 lead.
The Finish
The Owls scored twice in the ninth, on a two-out B.J. Murray single the opposite way, but ODU took the win.
The Arms
The Beginning
Murray kept his ninth-inning momentum from game one, scorching a home run over the scoreboard in right for an early 2-0 lead (plating DeBose, after his third hit of the afternoon).
The Turning Point
Again, ODU had a big frame, a six-run third, with every runner and every run coming with two outs. A walk started the rally, followed by two doubles, two singles and a three-run home run.
The Finish
Monarchs' starter Hunter Gregory completed his effort, throwing six zeroes after the opening-inning homer. He allowed just three baserunners – two walks and a single – after the Owls had a runner thrown out at home in the second.
The Arms
The Sunday finale, once again, has been moved up to a 10 a.m. first pitch.
