BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team returns to competition for the first time since November of 2019, opening up the '21 spring campaign with two home matches this weekend.
With the global pandemic pushing the normal fall season to spring, the Owls will begin their defense of back-to-back Conference USA regular season titles when league play starts in a month's time. Before that, the squad will compete in five non-conference matches, the first two of which will be at FAU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night and Sunday afternoon, hosting Utah Valley and USF, respectively.
Owls' 2019 in Review
The Owls won the outright conference regular season title with an 8-1-1 mark, advanced to the final match of the C-USA Tournament, and finished with an overall record of 15-4-2. That championship match, Nov. 10, 2019, came 451 days ago.
Owls' Weekend in Preview
The new season begins Thursday night when the Owls play Utah Valley for the first time in program history. The Wolverines were 11-9-1 in 2019, finished third in the WAC regular season standings with a 5-3 record, and like FAU, fell in the title match of their league's postseason tournament, a 2-1 overtime loss.
USF had a tremendous 2019 campaign: 16-5 overall, No. 2 seed and eventual AAC Tournament champions, and wins over Florida and Washington in the NCAA Tournament towards advancing to the third round, the Sweet 16.
Opponent History
Again, FAU and UVU have never matched up. The Owls and Bulls have met 16 times in history, but not since 2014, a 1-0 FAU win in Tampa on Aug. 22. USF leads the series, 8-6-2. The last matchup between the two squads in Boca Raton was on Aug. 28, 2009, with USF winning, 1-0.
