"We certainly needed every run … we had an eight-run lead going into the ninth and can't get three outs? It's not good. And now (Mike Entenza) is used, we can probably use him tomorrow, but still it's not good. This has got to change. We saw it in the fourth, someone has to come out of the bullpen and do something."
Â
The Beginning
Mitchell Hartigan got the Owls (5-1) on the board with a solo shot in the second, and the Owls strung together an eight-run third, featuring a BJ Murray homer, back-to-back RBI singles by Hartigan and Sam Low, and a two-run single by Wilfredo Alvarez. But Seton Hall (1-3) stormed back with nine in the fourth and a quick 9-9 tie.
Â
The Turning Point
In the bottom of the fourth, a two-out Pirate error extended the inning, and Jared DeSantolo gave the Owls the lead with a single through the right side. Hunter Cooley had put a band-aid on the fourth, and went on to throw the next four innings scoreless in a tremendous outing.
Â
The Finish
The Owls got much-needed insurance with two three-run shots off the bat off Nolan Schanuel, in the seventh and eighth, and added a fourth run in that seventh inning as well. Which as McCormack said, all of which were needed, as five came across for the Pirates in the ninth, which necessitated Mike Entenza coming on. He induced a groundout to finally close out the matchup.
Â
The Arms
- Starter Javi Rivera was perfect through three, with four strikeouts, and added another K in the fourth, but couldn't get out of it
- Cooley (2-0) earned the win, with 4 1/3 innings with no runs allowed, and five K's of his own
- Entenza's save was his second of the week and of his Owl career
The Bats
- Schanuel had a 3-for-6 night with six RBI (upping his team-high total to 15 on the season)
- Murray was on case five times, on a double, homer and three walks. He scored three times and knocked in two
- Also with two hits and two RBI were Alvarez and Hartigan; Low scored twice on his two hits, with his first FAU run batted in and extra base hit, a double
- Hartigan hit his first home run of 2021, Murray his second, and Schanuel his second and third
- Nine Owls had hits, towards the team's 15; 10 different players scored runs
