BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University's softball team (2-8) closed out the 2021 "Strike Out Cancer" Tournament on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader loss to Missouri (6-2). FAU fell in the first game 11-3 and in the second 9-0.
The wind, like it had all weekend, continued to be the hitter's best friend, but senior FAU catcher
Kaitlyn Burke needed no help from the friendly wind for her back-to-back doubles in her first two plate appearances. Later, with a little lift of the bat, she converted her third hit of the day into a solo home run. In total, there were 11 extra base hits, five by the Owls, including four homers.
The second game saw Missouri's bats hold to form while the Mizzou pitcher held FAU to just one hit, an infield single by
Myah Murray.
"We competed with them and we hit," said
Joan Joyce, FAU's head coach. "In the sixth inning [of game 2], the team came off the field talking about breaking up the perfect game and based on the way we had hit the ball I would not have said that we had not had a hit. What really hurt us today, but really all weekend, was the wind. There were two or three that were hit that normally would not have gone out. In 26 years, I have never seen this many home runs hit in this ballpark. There were more hits this weekend than we probably give up in a year. I thought the pitching was better today. Probably the best we have pitched in consecutive games, even though we were beat pretty bad. This Mizzou team swing the bats."
Game #1
- Burke was 3-for-4 with two doubles, one homer, two runs scored and a RBI
- Sara Berthiaume and Murray also tallied multiple hits. Murray was 2-for-3 and Berthiaume was 2-for-4
- Murray and Fayth Davis each drove in a run while Berthiaume got into the extra base hit action with a double as did freshman Zoey Jones
- Abigail Morgan took the complete game loss
Game #2
- Murray beat out a sixth inning infield single to break up a potential perfect game by Missouri
- Lynn Gardner tossed a complete game for FAU and struck out four in the loss
The Owls will return to the road next weekend playing a single game on Saturday at USF and a doubleheader on Sunday. To follow FAU, and for the most up-to-date schedule, visit FAUSports.com or follow the team on Twitter @
