BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team (1-4, 1-0 Conference USA) opened the 2021 home spring season with a five-set win over league foe Middle Tennessee (0-3, 0-1 C-USA).
The Owls opened the match with a 25-15 first-set decision and appeared to be in charge of the contest. MT fought back in the second set to edge out FAU 25-23. The two teams would split the next two sets to force a fifth and final set, in a match that saw 14 lead changes. The Owls took control early in set five and maintained that lead for the 15-12 deciding set final.
"I love how hard we competed for every point," said
Fernanda Nelson, FAU's head coach. "Middle Tennessee is a very athletic team and we were able to play really good defense against them today. We served and passed well as a team and that's what it is going to take for us to be successful. I'm very proud of how we played as a group today. Now we will regroup and get ready for another big game tomorrow!"
- Camryn Volger led the Owls' offensive attack with 16 kills
- Transfer Scherine Dohoue recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs
- Stephanie Young guided the Owls' offense with a team-high 21 assists while freshman MiaBella English added 20. Young also contributed 10 kills
- At the net it was Aniya Harvey who tallied four block assists while Nikola Bartecka had three
