– College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) has announced its 100 Greatest Swimmers and Divers of the past century. Noemi (Lung) Zaharia, an alum of the Florida Atlantic University swimming & diving program, was selected to the prestigious honor.
Zaharia is one of the top swimmers in FAU history who was inducted into the FAU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. During her established career, Zaharia captured eight individual NCAA Division II Championships, including two in 1991 (200 IM, 400 IM), three in 1992 (200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM), and three in 1993 (200 back, 200 IM, 400 IM). In 1992, Zaharia received NCAA Female Athlete of the Year recognition.
Prior to joining FAU, Zaharia was already a decorated swimmer. She competed in both the 1998 and 1992 Olympic Games representing Romania. In 1988, Zaharia won the silver medal in the 400 IM and the bronze medal in the 200 IM. Zaharia also swam in the 1987 World University Games, where she captured five gold medals as well as two bronze medals on her way to winning the Most Valuable Athlete Award.
Zaharia returned to the FAU swimming & diving program to serve as the associate head coach from 1997-2000. During her coaching tenure, Zaharia coached four athletes who qualified for the 1996 Olympic Games.
CSCAA released its Greatest 100 Swimmers & Divers list as a celebration of the association's 100th anniversary.
