BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University women's cross country and track & field head coach
Alex Smolka has announced the team's 2021 indoor track & field season schedule. The slate includes three invitationals at two different schools and will finish with the Conference USA Indoor Championships.
Â
"We are beyond ecstatic to have the opportunity to compete indoors this year," said Smolka. "With everything going on, it was definitely up in the air for a while, but it is extremely exciting for the team to know they will be able to lace up the spikes and race around the track once again since we were not able to race during last year's outdoor season."
Â
The Owls will open up the indoor season with two meets in Birmingham, Alabama. Next Friday, Jan. 15, FAU will compete at the Blazer Invitational and will close out the weekend at the Vulcan Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 16. This marks the fifth consecutive year FAU will compete at both meets, which are hosted by UAB at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Â
FAU will finish out the regular season at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from Friday, Feb. 5 to Saturday, Feb. 6.
Â
The 2021 C-USA Indoor Championships will take place from Saturday, Feb. 20 to Sunday, Feb. 21 at UAB for the 10th straight year. Following conference championships, the NCAA Indoor Championships is scheduled from March 12 to 13 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Â
"Our sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers have not competed in 11 months," added Smolka. "That is the longest break they have ever take from competing since starting track & field in elementary or middle school.
Â
"We are extremely grateful to our administration as well as C-USA to have come up with a protocol which will allow us to compete in the safest way possible during these unprecedented times."
