Griffith Nominated to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Former Florida Atlantic University women's basketball student-athlete Yolanda Griffith has been announced as a candidate for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Griffith played at FAU in 1992-93 and is one of eight first-time nominees.

During the 1992-93 season, her one year at FAU, Griffith earned the title as an All-America honors and was named the Division II Kodak Player of the Year. Still to this day, Griffith holds FAU school records in single-game rebounds (33), single-game points (46), single-game field goals (21), single-season rebounding average (16.0), single-season points (621) and single-season rebounds (352). The Chicago product is also third all-time in steals tallied in a single season (109). In 2006, Griffith was enshrined into the FAU Hall of Fame.

Griffith played 11 seasons in the WNBA, earning seven All-Star nods, while being named league MVP when she played for the Sacramento Monarchs in 1999. She was the second overall pick in the 1999 draft, leading the way for the Monarchs to win the 2005 WNBA title, and being named Finals MVP.

In her professional playing career, Griffith scored 4,238 points, pulled down 2,444 rebounds and tallied 323 blocks.

Griffith is a two-time Olympian and gold medalist. She earned her medals while playing for the U.S. Women's National team in 2000 (Sydney, Australia) and 2004 (Athens, Greece).. The team also did not lose a single game in her two years representing the U.S (16-0).

Currently, Griffith an assistant coach for the Boston College women's basketball team. Prior to arriving in Boston, Griffith began her assistant coaching career with the Indiana Fever in the WNBA. She began her collegiate coaching career at Dartmouth in 2011 for two seasons, and then made stops at Lafayette, Massachusetts and Albany.

Finalists from the North American and Women's committee for the Class of 2021 will be announced during the NBA All-Star Weekend, scheduled for early March. The Class of 2021 will be revealed around the NCAA Final Four (early April).

The Class of 2021 enshrinement ceremony is set to take place in September 2021 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Griffith is on the list with greats such as Doug Collins, Paul Pierce, Swin Cash, Becky Hammon and more.
