DALLAS –Â
Marisha Thompson of the Florida Atlantic University women's track & field team has been tabbed the Conference USA Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league Wednesday. This is the first honor of its kind for the freshman, who raced in her inaugural collegiate indoor race this weekend.
Â
"Being named runner of the week under any circumstances is a great honor," said head track & field coach
Alex Smolka. "Given that Marisha is a freshman and received the award for her first ever collegiate race is awesome! Hopefully, it will give her great confidence for her journey ahead. The road to success is never without ups and downs and bumps and bruises, but hopefully this award will remind Marisha and all our student-athletes that success is not never having failed. Success is overcoming obstacles and learning how to live with our occasional failures."
Â
Thompson commenced the weekend tallying first place in the 1000m at the Blazer Invitational. Her time of 2:59.43 was not only enough to win the event, but put her at second all-time in the race in program history. She is also one of two FAU student-athletes to have run the race in under three minutes. The Norwood, Ontario, Canada native rounded out the season-opening weekend by running the mile in 5:15.14 to capture fifth. Her time stands as the sixth best in C-USA.
Â
The award marks the first time since 2019 that an Owl has been tabbed the C-USA Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Natalliah Whyte was the last to win the accolade when she won the award twice during indoor season, in addition to another two times throughout the outdoor slate.
