ATLANTA - The Florida Atlantic University softball team has had three former student-athletes earn a place on the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) 2001-2010 All-Decade Team, as announced by the league on Tuesday. Candice Freel, Pam Mazzarella and Nicole Myers were three of the 30 student-athletes selected to the team across 10 programs.Â
During the decade, five programs captured ASUN Championship titles, and FAU led the way with five titles. ASUN squads picked up 13 wins over the decade at NCAA Regionals with five wins coming from FAU in shutout fashion.Â
Candice Freel (2002-2005)Â
Freel earned three All-Tournament Team honors during her career at FAU and tabbed as MVP in 2004. She was also a two-time All-Conference selection and was named the 2004 ASUN Pitcher of the Year and the 2002 Freshman of the Year during her tenure. She helped the Owls capture three consecutive ASUN regular season and championship titles (2002-2004). Freel is still ranked in several top-10 categories for her pitching: wins (4th, 81), shutouts (5th, 35), innings pitched (6th, 824.2), games started (T-7th, 115), and completed games (T-8th, 91). Her name is written in the FAU softball record 39 times, the second most in FAU softball history.Â
Pam Mazzarella (2002-2005)
Mazzarella was awarded First Team All-ASUN for four consecutive years, the entirety of her college career. She helped the Owls capture three consecutive regular season titles and tournament championship crowns from 2002-2004, earning two All-Tournament Team honors, in 2002 and 2003. During her time at FAU, she played in a total of 277 games; the fourth-most in ASUN history, while tallying 789 at-bats, fifth in the ASUN. Mazzarella's name is signed into the FAU softball record book a total of 30 times, claiming one of the top slots in putouts in a game with 21, which was earned against St. John's in March of 2004.Â
Nicole (Nikki) Myers (1999-2002)
Myers is the only player in ASUN conference history to be awarded Player of the Year for three consecutive years (2000-2002), along with being a four-time First Team All-Conference selection from 1999 to 2002, while also being named the ASUN Championship MVP. She also helped FAU capture four straigjht ASUN regular season and championship titles during her time as student-athlete, but it did not stop there for the All-Star. Myers went on to throw two shutout wins in the NCAA Tournament against Big Ten foe Michigan in 1999 and SEC foe Florida in 2001. At the 2001 ASUN Championship, she set a single-game record for strikeouts with 25 and innings pitched, throwing 15 innings in the game against Stetson. She currently holds the most Pitcher of the Week honors with 17 and is sitting in the top-two in several career categories: games (1st, 285), shutouts (1st, 47), appearances (1st, 166), strikeouts (1st, 1,376), innings pitched (1st, 995.2), ERA (2nd, 0.99), wins (2nd, 108), games started (2nd, 128), and complete games (2nd, 120). In the FAU softball record book, Myers currently has her name written in the most, with 147 total.Â
To be named to the All-Decade Team, an individual must have competed for at least two years in the decade as an ASUN student-athlete. Individuals that obtained one of the following criteria were named to the team: three First Team All-Conference selections, four All-Conference selections, or multiple Scholar-Athlete/Player of the Year honors. Individuals that obtained at least two of the following criteria were also named to the team:Â Player/Pitcher/Tourney MVP/Freshman/Defensive Player, three All-Conference selections, or two First Team All-Conference selections.
