ATLANTA - The Florida Atlantic University women's track and field team has had three former student-athletes earn places on the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) 2001-2010 All-Decade Team, as announced by the league on Friday. Malika Clary, Daquia McCoy and Marilyn Stephens were three of the 32 athletes selected to the team across 10 programs.Â
Malika Clary (2002-2006)
Clary had a very successful career while attending FAU, earning a total of five gold medals during her tenure as an Owl. She received her first individual gold medal during the 2005 ASUN Outdoor Championships where she won the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.92. Clary went on to receive four more gold medals in relay action with the 4x100 meter relay in 2003 and 2005, along with the 4x400 meter relay at the 2005 and 2006 ASUN Championships.Â
Daquia McCoy (2001-2005)
McCoy made history while attending FAU, as the first student-athlete to win the 200 meters and the only 100 meter victor in program history. In, 2004, McCoy picked up two individual wins to go along with her successful campaign earning gold in the ASUN Outdoor Championship in the 100Â and 200 meter dash events. She was also a part of the Owls' 4x100 meter relay team that won the title at three consecutive Outdoor Championships from 2003-2005.Â
Marilyn Stephens (2002-2006)
Stephens was a significant member of the FAU track team during her career at FAU. She earned a total of five gold medals during her career with the Owls, all coming from victories as a member of the relay teams at the ASUN Outdoor Championships. She took home three titles in the 4x100 meter relay from 2003 to 2005, and was a back-to-back champion in the 4x400 meter relay in 2005 and 2006.Â
These three women joined together as a strong force during their time at FAU. They still hold the record in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:36Â which was set back in 2003.Â
"I am so happy and excited for Daquia, Malika, and Marilyn to be named to the ASUN All-Decade team," said head coach Alex Smolka. "They, together with Jian Jones were the backbone of our team during those years. These 3 (4 together with Jian) were exceptional student athletes who took a chance coming to a new program without a track and field facility on campus and wrote their names into ASUN and FAU history. Given the challenges they faced, it is even more remarkable what they accomplished. I will be forever thankful to them for their blood, sweat, laughter, and tears. They built the foundation for the program. I am also so impress to see what amazing people they have become."
To be named to the All-Decade Team, individuals must have competed for at least two years in the decade as an ASUN student-athletes. Exceptions are made for NCAA All-Americans. Individuals that obtained one of the following criteria were named to the team: Three First Team All-Conference selections in single event (individual only), five total First Team All-Conference selections (including relays), multiple superlative award winners and NCAA Championship individual participant.Â
