BOCA RATON, Fla. – Led by a triumvirate of standout freshmen, the Florida Atlantic University men's golf team finished second in the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate, a three-round, par-72 tournament at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. The freshmen -
Max Sturdza,
Alex Maguire and
Enrique Dimayuga - all placed top-10 individually.
"I was very happy with the way our guys competed this week," FAU coach
Ryan Jamison said. "It was quite windy all week and it took a lot out of each of our guys, and myself, mentally with the extra calculations that went into being successful."
FAU's second-place finish is its best since October's Mountaineer Invitational in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Coincidentally, the same three freshmen who finished top 10 in the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate did so in the Mountaineer Invitational.
Sturdza paced his freshman counterparts in the Intercollegiate, shooting a 7-under-par 209 to place sixth. Not only was that a season-best performance, but also better than two top-50 players he competed against.
Scoring 71s in each of the first two rounds, Dimayuga hit another level in the third. Dimayuga (T8) shot a 3-under-par 69 over the final 18 holes to bring his total to 211.
Alex Maguire shot a 4-under-par 212, including an impressive third-round 67, to tie for 10th.
FAU has a quick turnaround before its next appearance, the 2020 Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner and hosted by Auburn University. The tournament will be at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama and will run March 8-10.
"I thought our guys responded nicely and bounced back from an off week last week," Jamison said, "We have a lot of momentum heading into our next tournament hosted by Auburn (played in Opelika, Alabama)."
