BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (0-1) dropped its opening day matchup against No. 25/23 Wisconsin (1-1) by a score of 5-1. The Owls were barely outhit by the Badgers 5-4, but Wisconsin was able to take advantage of FAU's two errors on the board. FAU's originally scheduled game against Indiana State at 8:15 p.m. has been postponed.
Â
Wisconsin struck first in the second inning, as the Badgers tacked on two runs off an RBI double and sacrifice bunt. The Badgers would add another run in the third off a sacrifice fly. FAU was able to creep up in the bottom of the third, as
Danielle Bieberle started things off with a single through the left side of the field. After advancing to second base on a pass ball,
Ashleigh Jennings doubled to left field to score Bieberle and make it a 3-1 ballgame. After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Badgers capitalized on an Owl error to eventually score two runs in the sixth. The Owls were unable to respond, retiring the first three batters in the sixth and seventh to fall, 5-1.Â
Â
- Jennings picked up her first career double to pull in the Owls' lone run on the night
- Jennings, Kaitlyn Burke, Gretchen Ebert and Bieberle tallied the Owls' four hits
- Lynn Gardner made her Owl debut by pitching 5.1 innings with six strikeouts
- Kara Lokeinsky pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and picking up two strikeouts
- Fayth Davis, who played in outfield all last season, made her debut at first, recording seven putouts
- The Owls, who ended the year third in the country in double plays per game, turned three double plays in the game
Â
"Wisconsin is a very good team," said head coach
Joan Joyce. "I thought that we did fairly well against them. Into the sixth inning, they only had three hits. At this point, we are playing the No. 23 team in the country and only giving up three hits, which is great, but we also put a lot of people on base, especially the first batter in each of the innings. Then, we couldn't throw anyone out on steals. We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot, which is what I thought we were going to be strongest at this year."
