Softball Splits Day One Games at Spring Game at Madeira Beach
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (5-8) went 1-1 on the first day of The Spring Games at Madeira Beach. FAU started the day out with a 9-3 come from behind win over Seton Hall. The Owls were unable to keep the momentum going in the second game, as the sun went down and the temperature dropped causing the Owls to fall against Miami (Ohio) 4-3.
Game 1 vs. Seton Hall
The Pirates were quick to get things started scoring three runs before the Owls could even get a hit. At the bottom of the fourth, Jolie Duffner started the rally for FAU. It was not until the bottom of the fifth the Owls saw any pay off as Myah Murray tripled to right field to start the long come from behind run. Murray scored off another triple from freshman, Sara Berthiaume to make it 3-1. FAU went on a run with four singles back-to-back as Ashleigh Jennings, Fayth Davis, Sommer Baker, and Duffner each singled to take the lead 4-3.
The Pirates made a pitching change before catcher, Kaitlyn Burke stepped to the plate and hit a single up the middle to push another run across to finish the inning with a new leader.
With the Owls up 5-3, they didn't stop there going on another run as Baker hit an RBI single to score two more making it 7-3. Duffner and Burke each collected RBIs in the home stretch to capture a 9-3 win.
Game 2 vs. Miami (OH)
After a quiet first couple of innings, the Owls bats came to life starting with a single from Jennings. Jennings later scored on a sac fly from Duffner making it 1-0. Late in the bottom of the third, the Redhawks took the lead scoring two on an RBI double and take the lead 2-1. The bats of both teams were silent until Miami scored two with two outs off an FAU error to increase the Redhawks lead.
FAU put two girls on with a hit by a pitch and walk with two outs, Duffner steps to plate and doubles to center field scoring both the runners and close the gap 4-3. Ashlee Patterson advanced to third on a wild pitch but was left stranded in scoring position as the Owls fall 4-3.
