The FAU men's basketball team saw its originally-scheduled matchup with the University of Florida cancled over the weekend following the health scare suffered by Gator player Keyontae Johnson the previous weekend. The Owls, therefore, will wrap up non-conference play Monday, hosting the Florida College Falcons.
FAU is now 4-3 after a 78-69 road loss at Stetson Tuesday night.
Karlis Silins led the way for the Owls in that contest, scoring 16 points, while
Bryan Greenlee added 13. Greenlee also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals.Â
Florida College, as a member of the NAIA, will play Monday's game as an exhibition. The contest will count toward FAU's record. The Falcons have played a contest vs. South Florida earlier this season with the same exhibition setup, falling to the Bulls by just 10 points, 94-84. Florida College averages nearly 85 points per game and have four student-athletes averaging 10 points per game or more.
Conference USA play begins and the Owls' schedule will resume in the New Year. FAU opens C-USA action Jan. 1-2 when Middle Tennessee visits The Burrow.
Offensive rebounding has been a point of emphasis for the FAU coaching staff and the squad early in the 2020-21 season. The message has apparently been received. The Owls rank No. 1 in Conference USA and No. 26 in the nation in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 14.1 per contest. Those offensive rebounds have led to the Owls to an edge in second-chance points in five of seven games this season.
FAU ranked No. 2 in Conference USA in turnover margin last season. The Owls averaged 1.81 fewer turnovers than their opponents in 2019-20. They have started off 2020-21 in similar fashion. FAU averages just 11.4 turnovers, while forcing an average of 18.9. The Owls' turnover margin is +7.4 per game this season, which ranks No. 1 in C-USA and No. 17 in the nation.
Bryan Greenlee made 7 3-pointers in his Owl debut and has since added 10 more. He would currently be the top 3-point shooter in Conference USA by percentage, but doesn't have enough makes to qualify for the rankings. Greenlee's hitting at a .586 clip. Greenlee's average of 2.4 3-pointers made per game is No. 6 in C-USA. He is No. 16 in C-USA in 3-point field goal attempts (29), and No. 4 in 3-point field goals made (17).
For the second time this season against an in-state, Atlantic Sun foe,
Karlis Silins was the leading scorer for the Owls. In their last outing, he led the team with 16 points vs. Stetson and also had a career-best 19-point outing in FAU's road victory over North Florida last week.
The Owls will be off for the holidays and return to action Jan. 1-2 in a home, Conference USA back-to-back with Middle Tennessee State. The Owls are 6-19 all-time against the Blue Raiders and hold a 4-10 record at home vs. MTSU.
All C-USA contests this season are scheduled to be Friday-Saturday, two-game series.Â
