MOBILE, Ala. – A late second-half surge from Jacksonville State lifted the Gamecocks to a 60-50 victory over Florida Atlantic University Friday afternoon at the Goldie and Herman Ungar Memorial Tournament at the University of South Alabama's Mitchell Center.
FAU (0-2) trailed by just four with 8:25 remaining when
Jailyn Ingram scored on a runner in the paint to make it 43-39. The Owls had three different opportunities to trim into the Jacksonville State (1-1) lead over the next two minutes, but couldn't convert.
The Gamecocks then tallied back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 10-0 run. Darian Adams buried one from outside the arc, followed by an FAU turnover. Just 20 seconds after Adams' triple, the Gamecocks' Kayne Henry was good from straight away for a 3-pointer and JSU led by 10, 49-39. JSU added four more points for a 10-0 run that effectively put the game out of reach.
FAU trimmed the lead to single digits with less than a minute left, but could get no closer.
The Owls led early, but struggled to find an offensive rhythm against the much larger JSU lineup. Down 12-7 in the early-going, FAU put together a 9-0 run to take the lead 16-12.
Michael Forrest capped the spurt with a four-point play, making a 3-pointer, drawing a foul and converting at the line.
Neither team was particularly sharp offensively in the first half. The game was tied at 20-20 with over four minutes until halftime and JSU scored the only remaining points of the half to take a 24-20 edge at the intermission.
Ingram got thing started with a bang after halftime for FAU, with a driving dunk down the lane. Following an Ingram steal,
Everett Winchester hit a layup to pull the Owls even at 24-24 just over one minute into the second half.
JSU built a lead of as many as nine midway through the second half. But the Owls responded. Winchester tallied a three-point play and Ingram recorded back-to-back buckets to pull FAU within four, 43-39, setting the stage for the Gamecocks' 10-0 run take control.
Karlis Silins led the way for FAU with 12 points and seven rebounds. Winchester and Forrest added nine points apiece, while Ingram scored eight.

Head coach
Dusty May on the Owls' loss Friday:
"We didn't feel like we played well in any facet of the game, especially offensively. We didn't finish well around the rim. We didn't shoot the ball well. Once we got down a few points, a lot of guys were trying to be the heroes instead of trusting each other. Now, we have to respond, figure some things out and get better. We're coaches, teachers. We'd love to ride the wave of success but that's not where we are right now, so we need to figure out some solutions and get better as a basketball team and as coaches."
