BOCA RATON, Fla. – While the 2020 season for Florida Atlantic University women's soccer has yet to begin due to its move to the spring, the program has begun the process of filling the follow year's incoming class. The first signee inked for the 2021 season is Jodi Smith.
Â
Smith is from nearby Pembroke Pines, a four-year starter primarily playing defender for Monsignor Pace High School. Additionally, she has played club for both Miami Lakes United Soccer and Team Boca, has participated with the National ODP team, and was part of a Region III championship-winning squad.
Â
Why Smith chose FAU:
"I chose FAU because it's close to home, but it also gives me the independence I wanted," said Smith. "Once I had a chance to meet the girls and see how nice and welcoming they were, I found my second home. Spending time on campus and in Boca Raton, I knew in my head that FAU was the place I would pursue my academic and college soccer goals. I'm a person who loves being outdoors and with campus being 1.8 miles from some of the most beautiful beaches, location was the cherry on top for me."
Â
Baker on Smith:
"Jodi is one the most talented players coming out of South Florida in the 2021 class," said head coach
Patrick Baker. "She possesses athleticism, speed, creativity and a wonderful left foot. Her versatility to play multiple positions is a definite strength and she fits into many systems/formations. Jodi is the daughter of a successful college coach (Michelle Smith) and she fully understands the demands of the college game. She has an en excellent understanding of how we want to play and will fit into our system right away. We are excited that one of Florida's best is coming to FAU."
Â
The current Owls are currently in preparation to compete this spring. Smith will join the program the summer following, with her freshman year starting in the fall of 2021.
