BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University's Nick Weber has been named to the 2020 Rimington Trophy watch list, given to the most outstanding NCAA Division I center, and announced by the Rimington Committee, on Wednesday.
Weber, a redshirt junior from Pompano Beach, Florida, began his FAU career as a 2017 walk-on. The Stoneman Douglas product was a member of the program's 2017 Conference USA championship team but used that fall season to gain experience while redshirting. The following spring, Weber's began the adjustment to his second offensive line coach in as many seasons, but he also began to establish himself as a future starter, earning the team's Spring Top Walk-on Award, the offensive line's "Most Improved" honors and the 2018 spring game MVP.
He rolled that progress into the fall of 2018 by challenging for a starting spot, earning more and more game snaps and ultimately a start in the season finale. Welcoming his third offensive line coach in as many seasons in 2019, Weber used the spring and preseason to earn the starting right guard job and was instrumental as the Owls repeated their 2017 performance with an 11-3 record as well as C-USA and the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl titles, all of which were the second time in three seasons.
To begin 2020, Weber made the move to starting center, drawing his 16th consecutive FAU start. Despite not having the opportunity to work into the new role during spring practice, Weber guided a line in the opener that did not allow a sack and provided coverage for a running game that accumulated 221 rushing yards on 33 attempts for an average of 6.7 yards per carry.
The watch list is currently comprised of 88 centers nationally. While more than a dozen All-America teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee uses the Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and the Football Writers Association to narrow its selection of the nation's best center.
Weber and the Owls will have a bye week this week and will travel to Huntington, West Virginia next, to face host Marshall at 2:30 p.m. The game will be carried by STADIUM Network, as well as on Fox Sport South Florida 640 AM. FAU will return home the following week and are scheduled to play host to UTSA at noon on Saturday, Oct. 31.
