NORFOLK, Va. - A 17-6 run early in the second half was the deciding factor in the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team's 65-55 loss to Old Dominion on Saturday.
The game shifted momentum several times in the early going, as the Monarchs (8-13, 4-4 Conference USA) scored the first five points, followed by Jailyn Ingram scoring five in a row to tie the score, 5-5. ODU responded with six unanswered points to go ahead 11-5.
Michael Forrest made back-to-back 3-pointers and Ingram made a jumper in the paint to give FAU (12-9, 4-4) its first lead of the night, 13-11. There were four more ties and three lead changes over the next 10 and a half minutes of game action, with neither squad managing more than a three-point lead.
A 9-0 Monarch run gave ODU a 31-24 lead with just under three minutes to go in the first half, but Cornelius Taylor scored the final four points of the frame, cutting the Owls' deficit to three at the half, 31-28.
The score was 34-31 when the Monarchs began their run, resulting in a 51-37 ODU lead with 13:49 on the clock. The Owls' defense kept them in contention and Forrest's third 3-pointer of the night pulled them to within seven, 59-52, with just under three minutes to play, but the Owls could not get any closer.
