BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (8-8, 2-3 C-USA) looks to split their second Conference USA roadstand of the season, as they face off against UAB (10-7, 2-3 C-USA) tomorrow. Game time is set for 3 p.m. Eastern.
FAU has started C-USA play with a 2-3 record, while looking to bounce back after falling to Middle Tennessee on Thursday, 81-66. The Owls are searching for their first win over the Blazers in four attempts with UAB leading the series, 2-9.
Astou Gaye and
Crystal Primm are coming off the last two games with consecutive double-doubles, which is believed to be the first time FAU has done so in the Division I era.
Primm is the Owls' leading scorer, as she is averaging 14.4 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game and a team's best 27 steals.
Lotta Vehka-Aho follows with 12.4 points per game and leads the team in assists (49) and has 27 steals.
Juliette Gauthier is the leading rebounder (7.5 per game), while averaging 10.6 points per game, and Gaye has a team's best 12 blocks along with 8.8 boards per game.
FAU fell in a road matchup at Middle Tennessee, 81-66. The Owls led for 19:51 in the contest, but were outscored by the Lady Raiders 30-18 in the fourth quarter. Primm and Gaye played consecutive games with double-doubles. Gaye tallied her third career double-double in the first 15 minutes of the game. The junior ended the day with career highs in points with 24 and rebounds with 16. Primm recorded her fifth career double-double by putting up 21 points and crashing the boards with a career-high 12 rebounds. The guard also posted her second consecutive 20+ point game.
UAB was chosen to finish fourth in the C-USA Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches. Rachael Childress and Miyah Barnes were picked to the eight-person preseason team. Childress is C-USA's leading scorer, averaging 17.3 points per game. Barnes follows with 12.6 points per game along with 68 assists. Angela Vendrell is the team's leading rebounder with 8.4 boards per game, while also leading the team with 78 assists on the year. Vendrell previously tallied a triple-double (10 points, 10 assists and 19 rebounds) vs. Alcorn. UAB is one of the most experienced teams in C-USA with six seniors and two juniors.
FAU and UAB will square off for the 12th time on Saturday. The Blazers lead the series, 2-9 and hold onto a four-game winning streak over the Owls with FAU's last win coming on March 5, 2016 in a 52-51 win in Birmingham. Last season, the Owls fell in the C-USA opener to UAB, 89-64. Gauthier led the Owls with a near double-double of 21 points and nine rebounds, while going 4-6 from beyond the arc.
Amber Gaston came off the bench putting up 12 points and four boards, while
Glenisha Harkless logged nine points in the start.
