Friday’s Practice - a Day of Celebration for Football

There is only one voice that can be heard during a Florida Atlantic University football stretch period. It is the voice of Wilson Love, FAU's assistant head coach and the football head strength and conditioning coach. Love's comments usually have something to do with the music playlist requested by head coach Lane Kiffin. Often Kiffin will drop in a country song between Love's preferred wrap. On Friday morning, Love's voice rang out, but this time it was in response to Happy Birthday being played in honor of the intense strength coach's birthday.
The players then used the day to move through the paces of the final practice prior to the first team's first scrimmage of the fall, which is scheduled for 2:15 Saturday, in FAU Stadium. The day included the normal drills like: indy, team, red zone, special teams and then wrapped with Coach Kiffin addressing the team, as he does each day.
Kiffin ended Friday's practice by calling Nick Weber before the team and asked the redshirt sophomore offensive lineman about jumping offsides. Weber, a model teammate, apologized and almost missed the announcement as the wheels turned in his head, knowing he had not jumped offsides during practice. But, Kiffin is the head coach and he had asked Weber to apologize and while doing so, Kiffin congratulated the Pompano Beach and Stoneman Douglas High School graduate for being placed on scholarship and it was a matter of seconds before the 295-pound offensive lineman found himself at the bottom of a dogpile celebration.
The day ended as it started, with celebration. Only the second was for a team member whose academic financial burden had been lifted through hard work and consistent play.
Player's Take
Nick Weber on Earning a Scholarship and if it was a Surprise
"I had known kind of. We had player evaluation meetings. I just didn't know when. I obviously had to prove it on the field too. But it was a surprise today. It was great."
On How the Announcement Happened
"I didn't even jump offsides. So, I was like 'h'mm.' I went with it anyways…it is crazy (the thought of not having to worry about paying for school). It is a lot of stress relief with money and all that stuff. Now you really just focus on football and school at all times."
Do you think it will change you in anyway? Will you go out and be the player you always are?
"I think exactly the opposite. Now, you have a whole university invested in you. Now, they are actually really counting on you to perform. I think it is even more pressure, which I like…you just have to come every day ready to play. Focus and have your priorities straight and come to play, ready."
Practice Notables
Senior tight end Harrison Bryant had a 60-yard run for a score early in practice
Armani-Eli Adams, a redshirt freshman safety, had a nice one-handed pass breakup in the end zone. The pass was on target and just inches away from being an interception
