BOCA RATON, Fla. – After helping lead the now-No. 24 Florida Atlantic University baseball team to a 2-1 weekend on the road over previously ranked Southern Miss, leftfielder
Andru Summerall was rewarded Monday by Conference USA as the league's Co-Hitter of the Week.
Â
Summerall had nine RBI and batted .538 in the series against the Golden Eagles. On Friday night, his run-scoring single up the middle in the eighth broke a 4-4 tie to give the Owls the lead in what would eventually be an 8-5 series-opening win. Then on Saturday, the North Palm Beach native exploded for a 5-for-6 night.
Â
He singled and scored in the first, doubled and scored in the third, and had an RBI double, eventually scoring for the third time, in the fifth. Then, after USM cut the deficit to 11-4, Summerall hit a three-run homer in the seventh, and would add another three-run shot in the eighth. His final line was 5-for-6, five runs scored (tying the all-time program record) and seven RBI in the convincing 18-9 victory.
Â
Sunday saw him notch another hit, run and RBI, for a final weekend total of .538 (7-for-13), six runs scored and nine RBI, an OBP of .533, and the redshirt sophomore slugged 1.154 against USM pitching. He's now up to a .299 batting average on the year and equals the team's high with both 41 RBI and seven home runs.
Â
Summerall shares Monday's award with Vinnie Pasquantino of Old Dominion. He follows three previously-honored teammates this year: Hitters of the Week
Francisco Urbaez (March 18) and
Joe Montes (April 22) and Pitcher of the Week
Mike Ruff (April 1). The Owls remain on the road for five more games, all in Texas, before the return to the Sunshine State on May 14 vs. UCF. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or go to
baseball's ticket website.
