Florida Atlantic University linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair signed an undrafted free agent contract, shortly after the 2019 NFL Draft ended on Saturday, with the San Francisco 49ers.
Al-Shaair, FAU's all-time tackles leader and a three-time team captain led Conference USA in total tackles in 2017, and was named the CheriBundi Boca Raton Bowl Defensive MVP the same season, after leading his Owls to a conference championship for the second time in program history and to a bowl game for the first time in nine seasons. The senior, who will graduate next week as the first in his family to do so, was injured midway through his final collegiate campaign.
Al-Shaair joins teammates running back Devin Singletary, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills (3rd round, the 74th pick overall) on Friday night and senior running back/kick returner Kerrith Whyte, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears (7th round, 222 pick overall) earlier Saturday, as FAU players to sign professional contracts in 2019.
He could possibly join former FAU running back Alfred Morris '11 in San Francisco. Morris signed with San Francisco as a free agent in 2018 but is currently a free agent again. Former Owl Keith Reaser, a defensive back, was the first Owl to sign with the 49ers. He did so in 2014 and coincidentally Reaser also had his senior season cut short due to injury.
