BOCA RATON, Fla. – The latest Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Tennis Rankings have been released, with the Florida Atlantic University squad checking in at No. 45. That is the program's highest national showing in nearly two decades, and the top ranking in the tenure of Head Coach Ricardo Gonzalez, currently in his sixth year leading the team.
"This is a pretty cool and well-deserved accomplishment for our team," said Gonzalez. "We will celebrate the moment with an understanding that we will not settle. We are halfway through the season and we will continue to get many opportunities to prove ourselves and climb up in the rankings. As long as we continue to lead this team with love, passion and hard work, the sky is the limit for this program. We are hungry for more and excited for the challenges ahead of us. We will continue to raise the bar."
The Owls won all three home matches this past weekend to improve to 8-5 on the early season. Other wins so far on the early season have come against in-state foes North Florida and FGCU, as well as against Nebraska and Louisville. The team has been battled-tested too, with four previous opponents also ranked in this most recent Oracle/ITA poll: No. 6 Florida, No. 19 Florida State, No. 27 BYU and No. 35 Miami.
In the early days of the program, during the late 1980's and early '90's (while competing in Division II), FAU was ranked by the ITA in multiple final yearly polls. The highest poll showing in Owls' DI history came in mid-2002, at No. 33. More recently, while members of the Sun Belt in 2009, the team rose to as high as No. 59. Three road matches are next on the docket for the squad, followed by six straight at home at the FAU Tennis Complex, spanning from March 9 - March 29. Admission is free to all home contests.
