BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University head football coach Willie Taggart has retained several coaches, who were instrumental in guiding the football team to an 11-3 record, a Conference USA Championship and a Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl championship last season. Taggart has also augmented that staff with a blend of experienced coaches in an effort to help defend that C-USA title and continue the program's ascent.
Offensively, Clint Trickett will be elevated to co-offensive coordinator and work with the quarterbacks, while returning to a room that features three players who saw time under center in 2019 (Chris Robison, Nick Tronti and Justin Agner). Joining the staff will be co-offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer, who most recently coached at Texas. Mehringer will direct the wide receiver group as well.
Special teams coordinator Jaron Fairman will fill the role of tight ends coach vacated by Trickett and will continue to head up the special teams efforts. Also returning to the offensive side of the ball is offensive line coach Jeff Norrid, who guided two players to First Team All-CUSA honors and saw the Owls drastically improve in 2019, allowing less than one sack per game over the last seven games. The running backs, who are expected to return an experienced room, will welcome Chris Perkins, who worked with the Owls the last three seasons as a member of the player personnel staff.
The defensive side of the ball welcomes Kevin Patrick, who will serve as the outside linebackers coach and will join Jim Leavitt, who was announced as the team's defensive coordinator earlier this week.
The first coach to work with the players will be the Joey Guarascio, who returns to FAU and will serve as the head football strength and conditioning coach. Guarascio will have the opportunity to welcome the Owls to the new weight room in the Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence, which will open soon.

Since Taggart assumed the helm of the Owls, he has ushered FAU through the December signing period, watched the 2019 Conference USA Champions defeat SMU 52-28 in the 2019 Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl and then used the NCAA recruiting dead period to build his staff. More staffing announcements are expected in the coming days.
The Owls are scheduled to open the 2020 schedule at Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 5 and will open the 2020 home slate versus USF on Saturday, Sept. 26.
